Born in Bonn, the city of Beethoven and Haribo, Nat completed the French–German AbiBac, followed by a year of voluntary service in Spain. Convinced that the best ideas emerge through intercultural exchange, Nat pursued the French–German double-degree program Regio Chimica, studying chemistry in Mulhouse and Freiburg. A Bachelor’s thesis in electro-organic synthesis in Prof. Werz’s group sparked their interest in organic chemistry. Later that summer, Nat received a DAAD RISE scholarship to synthesize phthalocyanines for cancer therapy at the University of Strathclyde.
Before beginning their Master’s at TUM, Nat worked with Prof. Krossing on unified acidity and reducity scales and supervised students in the physical chemistry teaching lab. Driven by an interest in identifying general concepts and reactivity trends, especially in organic reactions, Nat was excited to hear about a new physical-organic research group starting at TUM — and ultimately joined it.
Outside the lab, Nat enjoys climbing, swing and ballroom dancing, playing the saxophone, hockey, creating queer spaces, and far too many other activities.
Fun Facts
- One Christmas, Nat ordered 1,000 chocolate Santa Clauses at once (unfortunately, just for a school event) and recently 300 rubber ducks for another event …
- Nat never planned to go to TUM and applied just for fun. Once accepted and realizing what an opportunity it was, Nat even postponed the master’s start by a semester, struggling to find affordable accommodation, but also to gain further lab and teaching experiences
- Despite being a little impatient, Nat sometimes enjoys writing poetry. Highlight: a poem about boron
